Welcome to our World

Dobrý den!

Prague has always been the political, business and cultural centre of the Czech state since
it's earliest days. This historic yet modern city is more than 1000 years old and has achieved
status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

So it was Prague that the boys chose for their Fall European adventure in 2011.

Lounge

First stop was Montreal where their Super Elite status gained them access to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge.

Charles Bridge

After an afternoon nap, the boys took an evening stroll along the famed Charles Bridge, one of the most beautiful bridges in the world and the oldest bridge in Prague. It is almost 10m wide, 516m long and rests on 16 arches. Towers guard both ends of the bridge – the Old Town Bridge Tower and two Malá Strana Bridge Towers.

Castle

Prague Castle, the largest castle in the world, is also the most visited Czech monument. It is the most important of Czech castles, because from time immemorial it has been the residence of sovereigns, and currently the President. Here the boys are on the grounds of the Castle, just in front of St. George's Basilica.

Kafka

Strolling along the famed Golden Lane, avid reader Bow Wow was thrilled to stumble upon the Kafka House. Golden Lane is one of the highlights of any visit to Prague Castle. It was once home to castle workers and, as the name suggests, goldsmiths. The small houses were inhabited until World War II. In 1917 Franz Kafka, widely regarded by critics and academics as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, had his study at house No. 22. Move the mouse over the image for a shot of No. 22.

Castle

The view from above - you can see most of the old city of Prague from Prague Castle.

Peeing statues

The boys were a bit shocked to see two statues peeing in a public square. They could certainly never get away with that in Toronto.

Wenceslas Square

In Wenceslas Square

Municipal House

At the Municipal House, an exquisite art nouveau building from the early 20th century housing a huge concert hall – the Smetana Hall – the venue for some of Prague’s most prestigious concerts, as well as a large art gallery.

Chocolate Museum

"Oh oh! We're in trouble now! A whole museum about chocolate." The boys spent the rest of the second day immersed in the exciting world of chocolate. Though, truth be told, they skipped most of the exhibits and spent their time tasting all the samples on offer.

Old town square

Town Crier

Every hour on the hour a town crier appears at the top of the Old Town Hall Tower, waves to the crowds with his big cape then blow his bugle on all four sides of the tower, north, south, east and west. The boys pushed their way in to get a good view. Move your cursor over the image for a close-up.

Dancing Houses

The Dancing House or Dancing Building or Ginger & Fred is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in downtown Prague. It was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot (where the previous building had been destroyed during the Bombing of Prague in 1945). The building was designed in 1992 and completed in 1996. Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers – the house resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous. Chocapic

Bow Wow indulges his inner chocaholic with a bowl of Chocapic cereal and a chocolate bar for breakfast.

Beer

The boys liked to finish each day in Prague with a couple of pints - okay more like a couple of shots - of Staropramen beer.
